International Seminar on Post-harvest and Agricultural Bioproducts
On 17-18 October, 2014 CIEDI organized and held the International Seminar "New technologies for agricultural postharvest handling and generation of bioproducts" on tge Granados campus of the University of the Americas, Quito (Ecuador).
The event's main and guest speaker was Dr. Neus Teixidó i Espasa from Catalonia, Spain. Dr. Teixido i Espasa is a renowned specialist in the field of biological control of postharvest diseases of fruits and vegetables. Other participants and invited speakers were Dr. Viviana Yanez (CIEDI-UDLA), Eng. Jorge Burneo (Director R & D Agricola Pronaca), Dr. Alfonso Molina H. (SEK International University) and Dr. Eduardo Murillo PhD (Research Leader of the Biotechnology unit of the Autonomous National Agricultural Research Institute of Ecuador, INIAP).
During the seminar, Dr. Teixidó i Espasa explained what the significance of the new postharvest technologies for the conservation of food, especially fruits and vegetables. These alternative systems work in three dimensions: physical systems, low toxicity chemicals, and biological controls. The goal of these technologies or alternative methods are to completely eliminate the use of pesticides on crops by farmers and replace them with natural methods that guarantee a better product, but especially a healthier one for human consumption. Another benefit of these technologies is that they do not cause damage to the environment, so they are ideal for people who want to produce organically.
The event attracted 267 professionals and students from various universities and institutions that were involved in the event.
