Research scientists in CIEDI have a minimum degree of Masters of Science, while the majority has also obtained a Ph.D. degree at a university in Europe, the United States, Mexico, or other. Several of our scientists have multiple years of experience working as professional researchers at major international universities or research institutes and are well established within their scientific fields.

Research Interests

I have conducted research in the fields of Plant Pathology, Molecular Plant Biology, Genetics and Biotechnology. My work has focused on the development of diagnostic systems for viruses and viroids of plants employing techniques such as:

  • Immunochemical and molecular biology of plants and pathogens;
  • Development of diagnostic systems for viruses and viroids of plants
  • Characterization of crops of economic interest by molecular markers and analysis of differential gene expression in response to biotic stress;
  • Genetic engineering of plants and bacteria; and
  • Biological validation of plant bio-stimulants.

As a result of this work I have gained experience in the use, implementation and experimental design of:

  • Conventional and real-time PCR,
  • Nucleic acids hybridization both radioactive and non-radioactive,
  • DNA microarrays,
  • Bioinformatics,
  • Plant and bacterial transformation by genetic engineering,
  • Imuno-enzymatic assays,
  • DNA molecular markers,
  • DIC and fluorescent microscopy, among others.

In addition, I am familiar with establishing and conducting national and international projects incl. the supervision and direction of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and in establishing interdepartmental, interdisciplinary relationships within the international academic and scientific community.

Research in my group is related to alteration processes of proteins due to oxidative stress and its relationship to the development of diseases in association to natural aging of living systems. Currently, our work focuses on oxidative stress and stress resistance of plants treated with products that promote growth and development.

  • Strong understanding of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Protein Chemistry.
  • Extensive knowledge of analytical and immunological methods used in Chemical and Biochemical experiments. 
  • Experience in protein separation and purification applying different techniques. Thorough knowledge and experience working with HPLC-UV/Fluorescence, HPLC-MS, Flash chromatography, atomic absorption, SDS-PAGE (1 & 2 dimensions), WB, tissue culture, FACS, radioactive labeling, ultracentrifugation.

Research Interests & Skills

My major field of interest is cell and molecular biology, specifically virology and the ability to characterize virus isolates. By knowing plant virus isolates, it is possible to understand their gene regulation and thus methods to manipulate them may be discovered. Currently, I am working on detecting complex viruses in Allium cepa var. Aggregatum (Shallot) in the central and north Andean regions of Ecuador.

Education

Mario Gonzalez received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) in 2012. His doctoral research was carried out within the Research Group of Biological Neurocomputation of the Polytechnic School at UAM, participating in projects funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain. He made a doctoral stay at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Portugal, funded by the EMECW Lot 20 program. He is currently a lecturer and researcher at Universidad de las Américas, Quito, Ecuador. He has published in the area of Artificial Intelligence, complex dynamic systems and information processing using neural networks. His field of expertise and experience are bioinspired computational systems of recurrent networks with dilute metric connection.

eileen velez

Research Interests & Skills

My work has been focused in transmission dynamics, diversity and genetic structure of the protozoan that causes malaria (Plasmodium vivax)with the purpose of characterizing its populations in Ecuador. Techniques such as the use of microsatellite markers and drug resistance genotyping were used to determine if there is resistance to commonly used antimalarials 

Experience in the following techniques:

  • Basic molecular biology analyses: DNA extraction, conventional PCR, RFPL-PCR, band analysis
  • Molecular Software data analysis: Arlequin, Genalex. Lian, Structure, Network.

Research Interests

My research has focused on upper Andean river systems (≥ 2000 m.a.s.l.) as part of the Freshwater Ecology Management (FEM) group at the University of Barcelona (Spain). Specifically, I have focused on the management, ecology and distribution patterns of acuatic macroinvertabrate communities as well as bio-evaluation of rivers. My research has produced an evaluation tool to determine the ecological quality of upper Andean rivers (Multimetric Index for the Evaluation of Ecology of Upper Andean Rivers, IMEERA (span.)) and a program (CABIRA (span.): Biological Quality of Upper Andean Rivers) to calculate metrics for evaluating river ecology and IMEERA. In addition, I have become increasingly interested in chironomids of upper Andean rivers. Chironomids are poorly studied organisms that are an important part of the aquatic macroinvertebrate community and their food chain. In collaboration with members of FEM, I have been develloping research looking at their distribution and taxonomy.

My main area of interest is the study of human sound perception, particularly I have investigated the perception of low-frequency sounds. For such sounds, there is a growing awareness of the specific role they play in environmental noise problems. Since they are almost impossible to shield against and can have a serious effect on the quality of life, it is necessary to link their physical characteristics with their perceived effect. Such characterization requires the performance of critical listening experiments and a proper modeling of the hearing system response to low-frequency sounds.

  • Effects of soil type and land use in the processes of erosion, sedimentation, and carbon sequestration.
  • Studies on water quality and the relationship to filtration functions by soils.
  • Effects of climate change on ecosystems.

  • Studies of fertilizer use efficiency in different crops through the use of stable and radioactive isotopes.
